For the newest Marvel Comics adaptation film, the wealthy industrialist, Tony Stark’s backdrop has moved from Vietnam to modern-day Afghanistan. Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is injured and forced to build an armored suit, which leads to his taking on the Iron Man persona. The gifted Downey Jr. delivers a riveting, nuanced performance as Stark, which provides a solid center for this tale of heroism. Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow have accomplished turns as Jim Rhodes and Virginia “Pepper” Potts, but the film would be lost without Jeff Bridges’ portrayal of Stark’s enemy, Iron Monger. The flick’s action sequences featuring the shiny metallic suit are satisfying for sure. This is about as strong as summer movies get.
