College professor Jack Gramm (Al Pacino) has a hand in the trial and conviction of mass murderer Jon Forster, which leads the jury to sentence Forster to death. Before Forster’s execution, Gramm receives a phone call informing him that he has 88 minutes to live. Meanwhile, a killer begins copying the death row killer’s murders using chillingly similar same methods. To add insult to injury, evidence turns up that indicates Forster was wrongly convicted. Gramm is an unpleasant guy with a problematic past haunting him. As he searches for the killer he believes is after him, his surly character recedes into suspenseful situations. It’s refreshing to watch Pacino give another characteristically strong performance, even for a film of this relatively minor scale.
