ESPN
Black Magic, a four-hour, two-part, commercial-free television series, is a story about exclusion and the struggle for equal opportunity as related through the lives of HBCU basketball players and coaches. Directed by Dan Klores and co-produced by Earl “the Pearl” Monroe (aka Black Jesus), Black Magic traces Monroe’s illustrious basketball career including being the first graduate of an HBCU (Winston-Salem) to be drafted in the first round by the NBA (St. Louis Hawks) and leading the New York Knicks to a 1973 NBA Championship. The movie also highlights the career of his HBCU alum Bob “Butterbean” Love, who suffered from a severe speech impediment, but was a phenomenal athlete. By 1968, the Chicago Bull led in scoring for seven consecutive seasons — four of which he was All-NBA. Wynton Marsalis and Chris Paul narrate.
