Boom! Pow! Thud! Respected martial arts star Jacky Wu Jing goes for his in a flurry of kicks and punches in what should be his breakthrough role. Wu Jing is Kong, a dangerous kung fu fighter who’s been recruited for competition in Hong Kong’s underground network. This movie works through the question of whether the fighter can have his independence despite the larger context of a criminal underworld. It’s a bit of a cliché, but it’s still enjoyable watching Wu Jing flex his mastery of fighting throughout the movie. This is a compelling actioner, if nothing else. –forrest green III
