blackout
BET Home Entertainment/Paramount
After New York City was cloaked in darkness for two days in August 2003, things seemed to go back to normal once the city’s power was restored. However, Jerry LaMothe’s Blackout reveals that there was at least one Brooklyn community that would never forget those hot, tense summer days. Based on real events, the movie focuses on the residents of East Flatbush and how what began as a regular day ended in tragedy that would forever change their lives. Jeffrey Wright, who also serves as the film’s producer, Zoe Saldana, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Melvin Van Peebles and “The Wire’s” Jamie Hector star in the startling tale. Though Blackout suffers from overacting at times, LaMothe manages to capture the panic and desperation that quickly took hold of the community. –ivory m. jones
