New for 2008 is this thriller focusing on Jennifer Marsh (Diane Lane), an investigator for the FBI’s Internet crimes division. Marsh is called upon for help with a truly dark case, one wherein a criminal kills people live on his Web site with an intensity matching the hits that the site receives. Oscar nominee Lane is riveting in this intriguing film that poses interesting and timely questions — the foremost being: why are people attracted to representations of evil in various forms of media? Marsh eventually realizes that her connection to the case is more personal than she initially thought. Director Gregory Hoblit’s style in this cat-and-mouse flick is lean and mean. –forrest green III
