The "50 Million Pound Challenge" is a history making, life-altering program designed to combat the No. 1 health crisis afflicting Americans in general and African Americans in particular: obesity. A summer-long cross-country event, the Challenge made its eighth stop in Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park.

Vowing to "give up the pounds, not the fight," Dr. Ian Smith and some of his famous friends, including comedian Steve Harvey, hip-hop personality and DJ Biz Markie, recording artists Jagged Edge, Omarion, and Keith Sweat, joined forces to bring Smith's "50 Million Pound Challenge" to the ATL. "Weight is a major issue in our community," said Harvey, who was the host for the day's festivities. "We've got to get healthy because we have a lot of illnesses pertaining to weight."

Dr. Smith interacted with the crowd during performances and led a "Challenge" Walk for the attendees after the festivities. The "50 Million Pound Challenge" is one of the more far-reaching initiatives of its kind, designed to encourage people to take charge of their weight. "Celebrities have trouble with weight, too," continued Harvey. "They just have more riding on how they look. The average person just has to find the right motivating factor for them." - terry shropshire
