We know it as “the blues” and “being down in the dumps.” But what do you really know about depression? Depression may come and go in all of our lives, but a person who is clinically depressed feels “down” more often and simple activities become unbearable. What you may not know is that there are different levels of depression. Depression is a very serious disease, but it can be managed with treatment. Below is a short list of the varying levels of depression. Take a look and learn more about the disease you thought was a “phase” or a “funk.”

Major Depressive Disorder – is a form of depression in which an array of symptoms, impede a person’s ability to work, sleep, eat or enjoy once pleasurable activities.

Dysthymic Disorder, (dysthymia) – is characterized by the experience of long–term depression symptoms. Persons with dysthymia may also experience one or more episodes of major depression during their lifetime.

Psychotic Depression – is a form of depression that occurs when a break with reality (i.e. hallucinations and delusions) is coupled with a depressive disorder.

Postpartum Depression – is a form of depression that victimizes new mothers. This depression usually sets in about a month after a woman gives birth.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – is characterized by the onset of a depressive disorder during the fall and winter months. This form of depression is attributed to the lack of sunlight during the winter and usually subsides with the arrival of spring.
