NOTE: At this time, we are not seeking columnists and are not open to any new column ideas. The creative direction of the publication is at the sole discretion of the publisher.
Query Procedures
WE DO NOT ACCEPT QUERIES OVER THE PHONE. We ask that any interested writers e-mail or snail-mail story ideas, along with a résumé and at least three published writing samples, to Yvette Caslin, Executive Editor, 1269 Pryor Road, SW, Atlanta, GA 30315. The queries e-mail address is editorial@rollingout.com.
Queries should be submitted in writing via e-mail or snail-mail only and consist of three parts:
1. What is the topic?
2. How will you relate it to the urban reader? Detail what sources you will use and how you will research the story.
3. Why is this story important now? Why should you be the one to tell it? Why is this story right for rolling out?
PLEASE SEND THREE OF YOUR BEST MAGAZINE-STYLE WRITING CLIPS.
What Should I Avoid In A Query?
Don’t send us queries that have nothing to do with the urban reader.
How Will I Know If You’ve Accepted My Query?
Sometimes it takes us weeks to read queries. Because of our staff size and the volume of queries we receive, it is impossible for us to respond to every query. We will do our best to respond to your query in a timely manner. We prefer that you follow up with us via email. ALL interested writers will be required to take a writing test. NO PHONE CALLS PLEASE.
If you do receive an assignment from us, style and content, as well as deadline and payment, are negotiated when the assignment is made. The executive editor will then issue a contract to be signed by both writer and editor.
Spec submimssions
If you’re a writer new to our genre or a writer who strongly believes your story belongs in our publication, we welcome your spec submission. As stated earlier, if you’d like to submit this same spec to another publication, please indicate the time frame and we’ll do our best to accommodate with a response. On rare occasions, we might ask you to write the piece on spec.
After the Assignment
Submission
Writers who have not previously written for rolling out should study the publication before submitting queries. Writers must provide a list of sources with phone numbers and email––for fact-checking. NOTE: Under no circumstances should you show your finished article to the individual featured. It can cause trouble if the article meets with their approval but later does not meet with ours. Please also include your phone number or other contact information so we can reach you with any questions or concerns.
Sending Stories We accept stories via e-mail ONLY, attached as a Mac-compatible Microsoft Word document. All stories should be sent to editorial@rollingout.com.
