Top Stories of 2007

As we get ready to close the vault on 2007, ro decided to take a look back at the past 52 weeks of scandal and salvation, tragedies and triumphs. In a year that featured the lows of Jena Six and Don Imus, and the highs of Oscar night and Obama’s candidacy, 2007 was as hard to figure out as Dubya’s thought process. These are some of the stories from the past year that got folks talking. –todd williams

Regardless of how much has changed since 1982, when the King of Pop released his inescapable masterpiece, Thriller, Michael Joseph Jackson is still one of the most compelling figures in pop culture. Twenty-five years later, MJJ is still capable of capturing the world’s attention.

This year the Bowl was more than “Super” — it was extraordinary. As the Indianapolis Colts’ Tony Dungy and the Chicago Bears’ Lovie Smith became the first and second African American head coaches to lead their teams to the Super Bowl. Dungy walked away with the Lombardi Award, and another trail was blazed.

Ms. Berry was pretty busy in 2007, starring in the suspense thriller Perfect Strangers and the autumnal tearjerker Things We Lost In the Fire. But, in spite of a pair of relatively high-profile flicks, the biggest news for Ms. Berry was the bun in her oven — which she confirmed in September during an appearance on Oprah.

James Brown’s Funeral
ro’s coverage of James Brown’s funeral was one of the more touching segments of 2007. The funeral featured a performance by Brown’s band (the Soul Generals) and an impromptu dance by MC Hammer. Michael Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton, Rev. Jesse Jackson and Brown’s daughter, Venisha Brown, gave touching eulogies.

 


T.I.’s Release from Jail
Moments after rapper-actor Clifford “T.I.” Harris was released on a $3 million bond from the Richard B. Russell Federal Building in Atlanta, rolling out TV was on the scene to capture the embattled star’s first interview since being apprehended on gun charges.

 


Pimp C’s Funeral
Over 1,700 family, friends and fans of Chad “Pimp C” Butler filled the Robert A. Bowers Civic Center in Port Author, Texas to pay tribute to another fallen legend in hip-hop.

 


Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and T.I.’s Birthday Party
