Owner, Word of Mouth Promotions
The generator that powers much of Cleveland’s club scene comes in the form of two words — Arnold Hines. The owner of Word of Mouth Promotions has the area between the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie on lock. Hines, who was introduced to the intricacies of club promotions as a bouncer, now has three of the hottest events in Northeast Ohio poppin’ off on consecutive days each week. There is the Anatomy on Thursdays, the Sunset Lounge parties on Fridays, and the Script Nightclub on Saturdays.
It wasn’t always this sweet for the Newark, N.J., transplant. “The first three to five years, I was trying to figure it out. I was just doing holidays. And it wasn’t until I got a weekly under my belt that I started getting people to my events [in large numbers]. I figured it out,” he says.
Hines also figured out how to seamlessly weave his way through the circles of cultural influencers. Hines has put on parties for Venus and Serena Williams and LeBron James, as well as hosted launch parties for Hennessey and Sky 90. For the New Year, he is hosting a party at Scripts from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. with a $10 entry fee before midnight. Even more intriguing is the private dinner party at the Intercontinental Hotel. Hines believes such events foster camaraderie.
“I’m in the nightclub a lot and I see a lot of people and I don’t know what these people do. You [don’t] have a chance to sit down and get to know them,” Hines says. “With the dinner party you can sit down and kind of really network and talk with people and see what they do on a day-to-day [basis].” –terry shropshire
