With the holiday season in full swing, many people are planning festive events. Amongst the merriment, some feel a bit of anxiety, fearing that they simply won’t be successful in planning and executing the perfect holiday gathering.

Event planner Kelly Jones of Goodness Gracious Inc., has a few tips for those wishing to throw a memorable party. Her step-by-step guide is guaranteed to turn any party from “drab” to “holiday fab.” She advises planners to:

Prepare Your Guest List. – “Know how many people you’re expecting and always plan for 20 percent more.”

Prepare Your Menu – “It’s OK to have new items within the menu, but have some things that [guests] understand, as well,” she warns, adding that it’s also wise to prepare for visitors who just show up. “Always have a couple of bottles of wine or decent champagne hanging around and cheese and crackers.

Just have it because … it always looks smart to be able to uncork something and serve it.”

Choose Your Décor – “Themes are great [but] it doesn’t have to be as deep as one would think,” Jones says. “You can go with themes in terms of color [or] natural surroundings — all of that should be taken into consideration when planning. Décor is very important [because] it sets the tone.”

Avoid Stress – “Do as much in advance as possible,” she says. “Even if it’s a month in advance and it’s just going to sit there — let it sit there because you know it’s done.” After tackling these steps and adding a few personal touches, the remainder of the planning should be a piece of cake. - janaya black and roz edward
