Darren Gibson is a role model. No, not because he can rap or jump higher than a roundball superstar. Gibson is a role model because he created a career path for himself and achieved success in the process. The Queens, N.Y., native is vice president and chief operations officer for Ken Harris & Associates Realty in Atlanta.

“I never wanted anyone to know more than I [do],” recalls Gibson, who got his start in real estate after purchasing his own home. Gibson graduated from Winthrop University and received his real estate license in 1988.

Having more than 18 years in the real estate game, Darren knows that customer service is a major part of his success. “This is a face-to-face contact business. If you treat one client well, they will tell five of their friends,” he says. In light of the fluctuating real estate market, Darren still believes that all is not lost. “The real estate market is very similar to the stock market, in that we have our ups and downs. The market is correcting itself and [it] is now a buyer’s market. Buyers have more choices than they did three years ago.”
