Over the years, civil rights activist Dr. Ben Chavis has willingly taken on the role of advocate and voice of reason, not only for the hip-hop community, but for young African Americans across the globe. With the hip-hop culture seemingly always under attack for many of the things that go awry in the black community, Chavis suggests that with the proper leadership, more positive results will follow.

“ Young people need some good information to make good out of their lives. There are a lot of player haters of hip-hop. We need to defend hip-hop and be an advocate for hip-hop. Economic empowerment and political empowerment have to go together and that’s why hip-hop is about [accomplishing] our highest achievement both politically and economically,” says Chavis. - jason thompson
