Associate Corporate Counsel, YouTube.com
In July 2006, there were over 100 million videos being watched per day on YouTube. The company has undoubtedly become a cultural phenomenon, recognized for its innovative strategies to engage users. Bakari Brock, associate corporate counsel with YouTube, is happy to play a role in the company’s success.
“My day-to-day work often involves dealing [with] ... artists and their labels and also the whole slate of device manufacturers like mobile phones, set-top boxes and televisions so that as many people as possible can access YouTube.com from anywhere in the world,” Brock says.
Originally from Atlanta, Brock practiced law there for two years before relocating to San Berdino, Calif., to work for YouTube in 2007. Thus far, the relocation has been demanding, but rewarding.
“Keeping up with the pace of ever-evolving and changing technology [is challenging],” he says. “One of the hardest things to do is staying well versed in [trends] that might be one thing today, but we know that in a week from now, or a month from now, or a year from now, will be very different.”
To stay abreast of the frequent changes, Brock immerses himself in information, from keeping up with numerous RSS feeds to reading AlleyInsider and Fader.
“Knowing that we’re on the forefront of [the] evolving music and technology business [is fulfilling],” he says. “Knowing that we’re there even though it’s extraordinarily challenging, means that we get to determine where that strategy goes in the future, and that’s one of the things that I find most enjoyable.” – j.h.
