Assistant Professor,
Department of Religion/Princeton University
There has been considerable progress made to achieve social and legal equality for African Americans over the past century. Many of those leaders who fought tooth and nail to bring about such changes are a distant memory to today's youth; it's being left up to a new generation of thought-provoking individuals to assure that the right message is delivered effectively.
As the assistant professor in the department of religion for the esteemed Princeton University, Eddie Glaude Jr. feels that there is much more road to be traveled to battle social injustice - and now is the time to act. "It's our time, our term. It's time for young black folks to step up and to assume the range of leadership and offer more motivating and creative strategies to get us out of this quagmire," opines Glaude at the National Urban League's Young Professionals (NULYP) convention in St. Louis.
With a focus in American pragmatism, African American religious history and its place in American public life, Glaude teaches his students and those in various communities the importance African American identity and utilizing available resources.
"We all have the capacity to transform the circumstances of this nation; they just need to understand that the power is in us. When we understand that it's our time then we will begin to organize, mobilize, and put forward organizational strategies we use to build organizations, transform and extend organizations to reflect our energy. So the only thing we need to do is understand that it's in us, then all hell is going to break loose," finishes Glaude. -jason thompson
