Personal Finance Columnist, Houston Chronicle
Shannon Buggs has her finger on the pulse of economic matters. As the personal finance columnist for the Houston Chronicle, Buggs offers readers practical information on a wide range of topics — from tracking down favorable student and mortgage loan rates to estate planning to navigating the labyrinth of IRS rules. The business-savvy scribe also keeps the public engaged in economic conversations through her blog.
“It makes me feel necessary as a journalist. In the past, it’s been great to give people news that they want to know about, but this is actually news that they are using,” shares the nine-year Houston Chronicle reporter. “It’s not what I anticipated that I would be [doing] as a journalist … [but] I find it to be a wonderful career path for me.”
Buggs, who completed the personal finance planning certificate program at the University of Houston, recently received a leadership empowerment award from the Houston chapter of the National MBA Association.
“Education is very important. [Try] to go to the best possible schools that you can go to, not only because the education is great, but the connections are wonderful and they open up doors. [Be] prepared and work longer and harder than anyone else, [don’t let] someone tell you what it is that you can do,” says Buggs. –marissa mitchell and m.l. fling
