Creator/General Manager, Beauty Genesis International
Johnathan Carthon understands that faith, family, friends and freedom are important aspects of life. Through his company, Beauty Genesis International, he ensures that fussing with unruly hair will never interrupt the daily progression of these priorities. "In my marketing research, I found that women want healthy hair and they want to have time for a more simplified lifestyle," he explains, adding that his line of hair care products, Simply Healthy Hair, was a vision that came to fruition once his job in the corporate world came to an end. "I started my career at Carson's and we were acquired by L'Oreal USA. In 2004, they decided to close the Chicago office, so I decided to step out on faith," he says. "I took everything I had and a lot of what I didn't have and created my own company." Three years after his faithful leap, Carthon's products have garnered the attention of more than just women craving beautiful hair. "I won a business grant from Miller Brewing Company [and] a grant from Harvard Business School through their African American student union," shares the businessman, who believes that maintaining decent business ethics is necessary as minority-owned businesses become more profitable. "I don't think people should just support black businesses just to support black businesses," he opines. "We, as business owners, have to make sure we provide good service and great products that are equal or better to any other company. I believe I have a great product." Carthon's hair care products will be available at Walgreens stores this summer. - jamana jamison
