Behind the bright lights that surround international superstar Beyoncé and the R&B heartthrob Mario, is a hard-driving manager who ensures a smooth ride on the road to stardom. Heather Wagner worked with the aforementioned celebs as the senior product manager for Music World Entertainment. Now the executive is guiding artists’ careers through her Houston-based PR company, Juice Consulting.

“There’s room for everybody in this industry, if you want it enough,” says Wagner, who also worked with the diverse clientele of Universal Music in Europe. “I love being my own boss [and] picking clients that I have a lot of synergy with.”

Wagner directs the careers of artists in the entertainment, fashion and visual arts fields. She also represents scores of businesses such as the popular energy drink company Red Bull, Wade Wilson Art and the Texas-based Grounded in Music organization. Wagner, who serves as secretary on the Recording Academy board, garners exposure for independent artists through the organization’s monthly Houston Music Makers Mixers event.

“[There] is a great mix of all kinds of people from all types of backgrounds in the music industry here in Houston,” shares Wagner. “It’s for everybody, from the top level of their company down to the people who are emerging artists trying to get started with their careers,” she adds.

Wagner urges independent artists to maximize their reach by embracing local events and new technology. “New models are coming into place every day as to how to sell music and market music. And music makers need to think outside of the box on how to become successful. The media is a huge tool for doing that,” she says. -- apryl edwards and marissa mitchell
