“America is a sexually unhealthy country. There are high rates of sexually transmitted infections and high rates of pregnancies amongst our teenagers. Trojan brand condoms are hoping to reduce the incidents of high pregnancies by promoting barrier protective latex condoms. A lot of people are scaring young people by suggesting that condoms will break. But I always tell people that the vows of abstinence are broken more easily than latex condoms. We cannot continue to lose the most valuable resources that we will ever have — our bright young people.
I think we should start teaching sex education at an early age. We have to teach more than abstinence only. It’s important for us to give our young people the education that will encourage them to protect themselves. Over 19 million people get sexually transmitted infections in this country every year and more than half of those people are less than 24 years old. A new CDC study suggests that 1 and 4 of all adolescents between the ages of 9–14 have an STI. We can’t afford that.
The only way to get an STI is to engage in oral, vaginal or anal sex. We haven’t properly taught our young people the importance of protecting themselves because they’re having unprotected sex at an alarming rate. We have to empower them to be responsible. They need to understand why it’s important to use a latex condom every time they have sex. For young people who find out they are infected, they should go to their doctor or health clinic. They should also tell their parents and sexual partner. The right information can keep you healthy and save your life.”
