e. steven collins - voice of the community

Director of Urban Marketing and External Relations, Radio One

There’s a good reason that E. Steven Collins is acknowledged as, “the voice of credibility” at Radio One Inc. Not only does Collins host Philadelphia’s popular Sunday morning broadcast on 107.9 WRNB, “Philly Speaks,” he is also the director of urban marketing and external affairs for all three of Radio One’s Philadelphia affiliates.

When he’s not working to extend Radio One’s footprint in the Philadelphia region via his public affairs campaigns or selling WPHI 100.3 The Beat, Praise 103.9 WPPZ and 107.9, to corporate and regional accounts, Collins is active as an executive board member for the Urban League of Philadelphia and is involved in several other community and civic organizations, an incredibly active lifestyle, which he balances with uncanny ease.

“As you know, you’re not just a husband or a father, you go to church, and you have your relationship with your community and your profession,” says Collins. “In my work, so many of these things do, in fact, mesh together.”

With Radio One reaching 80 percent to 93 percent of the African American population in the metropolitan area, spreading important information throughout the community is crucial, says Collins. “They’re voters, they’re people who are buying — not just products, but opinions in terms of how they’re going to vote, how they’re going to vacation [and] how they’re going to raise their children,” he says.

Collins hopes that others in his field will use communication resources as a tool for upliftment. “It’s our [responsibility] to give back to the community and make change and make our community better; make our people better and give them hope,” he says. -gavin philip godfrey
