CEO, Rush Communications
Russell Simmons — of Def Jam and Phat Farm acclaim — has been doing his best Barack Obama/ Hillary Clinton impersonation. The multimedia mogul has been crisscrossing the country, not in search of a political nomination, but to promote his prepaid debit card, The Rush Card. When rolling out sat down with Simmons to discuss the card, the business titan was quick to stress the importance of financial education in the black community. Simmons says his Rush Card is a positive step on the road to that realization.
“I have a company called UniRush Financial Services,” he explains of his whirlwind media tour. “We have a black Visa card that you can have, and you don’t need credit to obtain it. It allows you the freedom to do things that many people take for granted like paying your bills over the phone, or booking a hotel room. Not only does it give you dignity, but it also provides a road to financial recovery for people that are in need of it. That’s what the UniRush company is all about.”
When pressed to reflect on his personal triumphs, Simmons was once again intent on placing the focus on what matters most — the empowerment of his people. “This is all about freedom,” he passionately reiterates. “People are tired of working 12 hours a day, only to get their money taken from them by all types of fees. No one wants to go to a check cashing place and get robbed anymore. So this card is offering an alternative that I hope people will take advantage of.”
