Director of Special Events, Macy’s Herald Square
Even though the eastern division of Macy’s is a fast-paced business that employs well over 45,000 people, the corporation still understands the importance of fostering relationships with individual communities.
Lisa Walker, director of special events at Macy’s Herald Square location, makes sure that the company keeps its commitment to the African American community. “As long as I’m here, we’ll celebrate [occasions such as] Black History Month and every month we have the opportunity to work with our customers,” she states passionately.
As part of Macy’s dedication, the corporation has worked with the National Urban League, the United Negro College Fund and the National Minority Supplier Development Council. They have also played host to several awe-inspiring events, such as the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame exhibition.
Hosting the exhibit, which features the shoes of civil rights leaders such as Xernona Clayton, Rev. Jesse Jackson and Sammy Davis Jr., was a no-brainer for the company, Walker says. “When it comes to celebrating the African American legacy, we look at what programs we can do here and do in-store to give back to the community,” she explains. “It’s really about giving back to our community and our customers. With our customer base being so diverse, it’s important not just to me, but to our company.”
