Executive Director, Black Women’s Contracting Association
Detroit’s Black Women’s Contracting Association (BWCA) is a nonprofit 501c3 Michigan Corporation established in 2001. The mission of the Black Women’s Contracting Association is to expand business opportunities and contracts for black female entrepreneurs by providing opportunities through networking, advocacy, and the exchange of ideas and resources. BWCA’s goal is to develop and nurture African-American women business leaders worldwide.
Lakisha Williams, the organization’s executive director, emphasizes that the organization is an advocate for favorable public and private policies and other activities for developing, retaining, and expanding African American-owned and operated businesses in the Detroit metropolitan area. “The BWCA empowers African American women-owned businesses, entrepreneurs, and youth pursuing careers in business by linking them to information, networks, resources, and access to economic opportunities that support continuous growth and sustainability,” says Williams.
However, the 28-year-old married mother of two explains that the diverse organization is not closed to non-contractors or men. “We are more than willing to assist minority men contractors and encourage young men and women to take full advantage of the BWCA’s resources, mentoring programs and in-house expertise,” she says.
In partnership with the Michigan Association of Female Entrepreneurs, the BWCA will hosts its second annual Women, Wealth and Power Cruise on Sunday, June 8, 2008, from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. aboard the Detroit Princess Riverboat in downtown Detroit.
