You can tell a lot about a person by the fragrance they wear. No one understands that better than Dawn Cukierwar. As the store director for two locations of Bond No. 9, Cukierwar specializes in creating the perfect custom-blended scent for customers.

“I walk customers through it and try [to] see what they’re all about, all the way down to their choice of handbags and the types of sports that they’re into, because a lot of a person’s personality is related to the type of fragrance that they wear,” she explains. Once a customer arrives at their perfect scent, the store keeps each customer’s scent combo on file so that it can be recreated when necessary.

In addition to specializing in custom-blends, Bond No. 9 also offers customers 33 different fragrances to choose from, including a line of scents influenced by different neighborhoods around New York City, such as Chinatown, Union Square and Chelsea.

According to Cukierwar, the store’s main priority is creating a unique experience for each client. “When you come to our store, it’s a different experience, right down to when you’re walking out the door. We offer tea and have a library of books about New York and perfume in general,” she says.

Although Cukierwar is a veteran in the beauty industry, she finds her current job to be one of the most rewarding she’s ever had. “It’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever done. Fragrance is a person’s signature, so when you help someone find the right scent and they love it, it feels good,” she says happily. “It really does.” -ivory m. jones
