As Houston’s most well-known beauty school, Franklin Beauty School has stood the test of time. Established in 1915 by Madame N.A. Franklin, the school has had four generations of family owners and educated thousands of students.
“My great grandmother would go around and teach ladies how to do hair in a horse and buggy,” says Ron Jemison Jr., who now operates the school with his brother, Sean. “She eventually opened a salon and school, which was later taken over by my parents [Ron and Glenda].”
Cosmetology students from cities throughout the South heard the word about the quality beauty school and their exceptional training facilities and flocked there by the droves. In fact, Tina Knowles, the mother of R&B star Beyoncé Knowles, was once a student.
“Tina Knowles attended our school in the 1980s and she opened Headliners Salon when she graduated,” he says. “We’ve kept a first-class establishment and we’re giving our students what they need to know in order to be successful in cosmetology and in life.”
The Jemisons are spreading the word about their expansion plans and newest venture, J PAGES Hair Magazine.
“Last year, my brother and I decided to launch J PAGES Hair Magazine,”Jemison explains. “We’ll do two issues this year with Tina Knowles and Yolanda Adams. We’re excited about the magazine because it’ll [give] a unique look at the hair industry and allow others to see the things that we’re doing at our beauty school.”
