President Pro Tempore, Detroit City Council

Monica Conyers, president pro tempore of the Detroit City Council and wife of esteemed U.S. Congressman John Conyers, has long been revered as a political leader in her own right. Not one to mince words, the councilwoman made national headlines when she sponsored a resolution in the Detroit City Council which passed unanimously, calling for the impeachment of both George Bush and Dick Cheney for defrauding the public to justify the Iraq war and for ordering illegal spying on Americans, as well as for sanctioning torture of prisoners of war and trampling their right to challenge their imprisonment through habeas corpus.

On Detroit’s present woes, Conyers advises the city’s citizens and her colleagues not to rush to judgement and paints a hopeful outlook for the city. “Anybody looking to move to Detroit or relocate a business ought to give Detroit a good look. In spite of of the present troubles and confusion, the outlook is good and the future is bright. We welcome you,” she says. Conyers has been the lone dissenting voice on the common council which voted 7-1 for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to resign. “Let’s not play with a resolution based on personal feelings. If we are going to make a decision that forces the mayor to forfeit his office in accordance to provisions of the city charter of Detroit, let’s do that. Follow the process,” counsels Conyers.

Conyers recently spoke at a town hall meeting held at Brenda Scott Middle School. She promised the embattled citizens of Detroit that the city council will continue to work diligently to address the community’s needs. “I’ve been to community forums over and over, and I hear your complaints,” Conyers told the crowd gathered on a wintry Thursday night. “We [city council] will provide clean, safe streets and neighborhood police patrol, and we will balance the budget.” -roz edward
