Owner and President, Lil Associates II Inc.

Lil Associates II Inc. has served as an advocate for minority- and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs) in Charlotte’s construction industry since 1983. Owner Carol Lilly and her team provide consultation and networking opportunities for MWBEs to be considered for construction projects.

Lil Associates II Inc. conducts research and provides clients with information about current construction projects. In addition, networking sessions allow clients to meet with companies that are seeking bids and proposals. Lilly believes superior knowledge of the industry is one of the most important tools her company offers clients. “Our performance, our knowledge of the industry and knowledge of minority- and women-owned business participation [is what] sets us apart,” she says.

Lilly stresses the importance of learning all aspects of construction. “[There is] a lot more to it than just saying ‘I’m going to be a consultant’ … [you have to] get a great [working] knowledge of the industry [and] the divisions within the industry,” she says.

Lil Associates II Inc., which is also an MWBE, didn’t reach its current level of success without having to overcome several obstacles. Initially, contractors on both sides of the bid process were skeptical of what the company could offer. However, through hard work and persistence, companies began to appreciate the value of the company’s knowledge and services. Lilly notes, “When I started out, contractors did not want to accept the concept. I wasn’t accepted by either side, but I had faith and drive, I knew it would work.” -cherice e. norman
