If I told you that David Malebranch was the star of a new hit television series, you would probably believe me. After all, he does speak with the confidence and poise of a polished actor. However, he is known to his patients and students as Dr. David Malebranch. “I do research, particularly looking at black men who have sex with men (MSM). I look at the cultural, gender and sexual factors of black MSM” explains Dr. Malebranch.
Dr. Malebranch has been influential in examining HIV/AIDS from the black MSM perspective. “We need to look at those who don’t have the disease and focus on what has worked for them — let’s focus on the positive rather than the negative,” he states.
Dr. Malebranch, who is an expert in the field and has done extensive work with HIV/AIDS, has a simple and clear message for all of us. “Every individual between the ages of 13 and 64 needs to be tested,” he says. “Long gone are the days of ‘at-risk groups.’ If you are having unprotected sex, you are at risk.”
Dr. Malebranch urges those battling the disease to “take a holistic stance on your health. Your immune system is very in tune with what you put inside your body. Therefore, eating well and abstaining from smoking and drinking will be beneficial to your health,” he stresses. “Just taking your medication is not enough.”
No, Dr. David Malebranch is not an actor, but he plays a great role in fighting a deadly disease for an underserved community. Let’s see an actor top that!
