Owner, Bourgeoisie Shoes

Harlem is a rapidly changing community, and in that changing environment, new business opportunities have arisen and entrepreneurs are taking notice. Rashidah Ali’s Bourgeoisie Shoes is a beautifully chic boutique that offers a unique experience for Harlem shoppers. “Currently, we’re the only high-end shoe store located in the area,” explains Ali. “We have seasoned [associates] who cater to all of our clients and customers who come in, [and] even if they’re [just] browsing, we like to make them feel special.”

After starting her own trucking company, Ali wanted to do something that appealed to her personality while being profitable. “The one thing I love more than anything is shoes and that’s what I decided to do,” she says.

Ali is especially proud to be adding to uptown’s shopping options. “I hope it brings a [sense] of security, knowing that you don’t always have to go downtown to get quality service and good merchandise,” notes Ali. “You can come right here [to] your own neighborhood.”

Though she was born in the Bronx, Ali’s love for the uptown neighborhoods is evident, and she is grateful that the community has embraced her boutique. Her advice for any burgeoning entrepreneur is built on her own experiences. “I think you want to have trial and error — with the least mistakes possible. Read and make sure you know what you’re doing because it’s very expensive to make mistakes,” she advises. “[So] definitely research, research, research.” -todd williams
