Neurologist, Conroe Regional Medical Center

Dr. Randall Wright has always had a fascination with the brain. So, after obtaining a degree in physics from Xavier University, Wright decided to study neurology at Baylor College of Medicine. He has since become the director of the Stroke Program at Conroe Regional Medical Center and is now involved in a national campaign called the Power to End Stroke.

“The Power to End Stroke is a campaign put forth by the American Heart Association,” Wright says. “We’re partnering with local media across the nation to get them to spread the message of stroke awareness.”

According to the American Heart Association, blacks are four times more likely than whites to suffer from a stroke. Wright encourages those who are at high risk to be vigilant about preventing heart attack and stroke.

“You first have to make sure that you don’t have high blood pressure,” he says. “Anything over 120 is high and should be treated. High cholesterol diets are very harmful and physical inactivity can also increase your chances of having a stroke. Smoking and excessive alcohol [consumption] are other major factors that contribute to increasing your risk.”
Along with influencing healthy lifestyles, Wright also speaks to younger individuals in the community about the importance of pursuing careers in the medical industry.

“You must have a passion to help people,” he says. “You must also be prepared for a long commitment in medical school. It’s important to be dedicated to what you want to do in order to succeed.” -amir shaw
