Area Development Director, UNCF
As a newcomer to the bustling Northeast Ohio corridor, Vallery Gaines of the UNCF needed an event to help her get acquainted with the black business community of the City by the Lake. The much-heralded Who’s Who of Black Cleveland gala, which showcased many of the movers and shakers of the city, provided the perfect opportunity. “I thought it was very important, especially me being relatively new to the Cleveland area, and getting to know who is who in black Cleveland,” she says.
The venerable United Negro College Fund provides tens of thousands of aspiring minority students needed scholarships and funding to attend college. Gaines said the Who’s Who of Black Cleveland event and accompanying magazine greatly help in her work as the area development director for the UNCF. First, Gaines had hundreds of the most accomplished African American businesspeople and entrepreneurs, who came from all regions of the large metropolis, in one area. It became a smorgasbord of networking opportunities. Secondly, the invaluable Who’s Who publication, which resembles a miniature phonebook or business directory, enables Gaines to contact and market the goals and objectives of the UNCF to the widest possible audience in Cleveland.
“So it will definitely benefit me as I work to do things for the UNCF and the youth in the Cleveland area. Really, my goal for Cleveland is, I’m really trying to promote education in Cleveland,” says Gaines.
