Director of Mosaic Center/Education Services, American Advertising Federation

Judging from Monika Ellis’ personality, advertising was the perfect field for her to pursue. The energetic go-getter is the director of education services for the American Advertising Federation, and uses her infectious enthusiasm to help teach youngsters the finer points of advertising.
“I work as the key contact for different programs, especially our sponsorships [such as] the National Student Advertising Competition as well as the Heineken USA A.A.F. Public Service Advertising Competition, among others,” she reveals.

Ellis’ boundless energy serves her well. Working with throngs of young people, Ellis is charged with guiding their first steps into the advertising world.
“They have never been employed before in an organization, so they don’t always understand things such as being on time, sending in all of the materials on time, [or] doing research by yourself,” she explains about the candidates. “[And] you’ve got to realize students come in and they go out. Even if you build the capacity of [their] knowledge by the end of the year, in the fall you’re dealing with new students.”

Even with the turnover, Ellis finds great gratification working in a field that nurtures some of the skills she’s honed since her college days at the University of North Carolina.

“I’ve always loved communications and I’ve been a big reader all of my life,” she shares. “In school, I studied journalism, [but] I wasn’t sure what [discipline] to be in, because I loved so many aspects of it.” –todd williams
