VP, Strategy and Menu, McDonald’s USA, LLC

McDonald’s is one of the most successful brands in the world. Karen Wells works to maintain that success as the vice president of strategy and menu for McDonald’s USA. Wells is responsible for developing and communicating fully integrated, cross-functioning plans for long-term growth. “I was asked to start a department that wasn’t even there, and find out where McDonald’s was going to be 5 or 10 years down the line,” explains Wells.

The Xavier University alum also serves as an executive sponsor for the McDonald’s African American Council. Prior to earning her current position in the company, Wells was vice president and general manager for the Indianapolis region. Her dedication to the company is obvious, and when you’re dealing with a brand as well known as McDonald’s famous arches, you have to be aware of the company’s storied past, while keeping an eye on its bright future.

“It’s just basic leadership,” Wells says. Her success is measured by the success of those around her, and she has to be able to guide a collection of individuals to move on one accord. “Regardless of what [a] person is responsible for ... it really comes down to an ability to rally a group of people around a cause,” she says. -todd williams
