EVP and Chief Marketing Officer, BET Networks

Janet Rollé is one determined individual. As executive vice president and chief marketing officer for BET Networks, she has helped brand one of entertainment’s most recognizable brands. She achieved corporate success by relying on her rock-steady principles on which to base her ascension. She has some sound advice for maintaining one’s integrity while breaking the glass ceiling. “It should always start with knowing who you are, what you care about and really being honest with yourself about what you’re best at,” Rollé explains. “[You must] put yourself in positions to leverage all of that for the ultimate benefit for your own career growth and development, and for the benefit of any organizations you may be interested in working at.”

Rollé studied as a classical, modern and jazz dancer in London, and prior to working at BET, she was vice president and general manager for AOL Black Voices and AOL Women’s and Lifestyle programming. “I [now] have the luxury of working in an environment that’s targeting African Americans,” she says. “So some of my challenges are different, as far as the level of passion and caring I have about what I do every day.”

“I care very deeply about the future of BET Networks and what [it] means to the community,” continues Rollé. “In some instances, it’s often easier to remain objective and in some ways, more analytical, about a business or a product you’re working on [if] you don’t have as close a personal connection — but working at BET is a tremendous opportunity to combine my love and passion for my people with what I do professionally.” -todd williams
