Director, Strategic Markets, Consumer Segment
Management, Citibank
When Rev. Jesse Jackson launched the Wall Street Project Economic Summit 11 years ago, Citibank was there, showing its support for the burgeoning initiative. Citibank’s continued commitment to Jackson’s brainchild is indicative of the corporation’s overall sense of duty says Citibank’s director of strategic markets, Terri Fowlkes.
“It’s really important to Citi that we attend and sponsor events such as this to show our commitment and dedication,” says Fowlkes, adding that Citibank’s sense of loyalty doesn’t stop there. “We also like to show our support for the other large corporations who attend and sponsor, and for the other attendees …whether it’s an entrepreneur, small business owner or student.”
For the small business owner seeking to understand the ultracompetitive world of business, Fowlkes offers stern advice: keep up with the times.
“Make sure that you constantly do your homework and stay abreast of what’s going on in the overall global economy, as well as in the industry or business that you’re in. Make sure you’re aware of what your competitors are doing and how well you compare to them,” she says, emphasizing that once a business owner is armed with information, the owner has to make sure that his or her actions reflect it. “You have to be able to adapt to the changes. Very often, people run into trouble when [they] just get stuck doing the same thing over and over again on a little treadmill. But as long as you know that things change and are ready to adapt to those changes, you’ll be fine.”
