Founder, Sisters Network Inc.
After having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993, Karen E. Jackson found that many cancer support organizations did not meet the needs of those who were fighting to overcome the devastating disease. So without much funding, Jackson decided to initiate change by creating Sisters Network Inc. Fifteen years later, the Sisters Network has become the nation’s leading support group for black American women who have been stricken with breast cancer.
“Back in 1993, I wanted to join an organization that would provide a voice for women who had breast cancer,” Jackson says. “I moved to Houston and wanted to connect with women across the country. This movement has grown in 14 years and we now have over 3,000 members.”
The Sisters Network Inc. also serves as the host to the National African American Breast Cancer Conference. Jackson expects the 2008 conference to be better than ever.
“This is our 10th year and the Kroger Company is a signature underwriter,” she says. “This year, we’re expanding our outreach with a full day of wellness. We have experts on cancer, nutrition, obesity and depression. These are things that we’re always concerned about. We will also have free cancer screening for all women. The annual Distinguished and Style fashion show has been very successful in the past and this year’s event will be more spectacular. We are excited about the conference and the women we have helped along the way.” – amir shaw
