It feels damn good to be Kenny Burns right now. The former Roc-A-Fella executive and marketing guru helped kick-start the careers of folks like Jay-Z, Monica and Kanye West, and for years has been one of the entertainment industry’s most respected personalities.
Currently the Washington, D.C., native and father of two is promoting himself via the “Black Poker Starts Invitational” on BET, and a potential deal for the “Kenny Burns Show.” “I’m in cahoots with BET real tough right now,” he says of partnering with the television giant. “I got beautiful friends, family, I’m living right, God’s in my life — I’m good.”
Burns calls himself the “Black Robin Leach,” and hopes that the “Kenny Burns Show” can provide viewers with something different, offering skits, interviews and other insightful pieces for viewing entertainment. Add that to Burn’s Studio 43 music imprint with budding stars Wale and Marky, and Burns is primed to place himself in elite company. “I’m just trying to be the new Oprah Winfrey,” he says. “I’m a cooler version — I’m not going to s*** on hip-hop because I am hip-hop.”
Recently Burns was in Detroit to support his friend and All-Star Pistons guard, Richard Hamilton, and stress the importance of nurturing the minds of our country’s youth. Even for a man who’s accomplished so much, Burns believes sharing knowledge comes before anything. “I’m just going to grow as I [go] ... and share the knowledge that I have with the youth,” he says. “I’m going to share with the youngins’ because I want to [them to do] better than me.” – gavin philip godfrey
