Many sports enthusiasts can think back to a time when the American Basketball Association was the hottest ticket in town a — premier league boasting the world’s most talented players. The period from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s was dominated by the likes of such greats as Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Moses Malone and Rick Barry, all of whom played in the league responsible for creating current NBA teams: the Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs and Indiana Pacers.
Fast-forward the tape to 2008 and people will find that there is a new ABA raising eyebrows across the nation, especially in the north Georgia neighborhood of Gwinnett County. As owner of the ABA’s Atlanta Vision, Quentin Townsend is committed to bringing a winning spirit to the Atlanta metro area while offering families more sports events for their enjoyment. “Truly what we do is we go out in the community, we help players and staff members get to the next level ... and we provide affordable family entertainment while also impacting the community,” says Townsend.
Townsend, an Illinois native, acquired the team in 2004. The entrepreneur has made major strides in the business world through his real estate company Townsend & Company Sales Team. Townsend’s success serves as an inspiration to those with sports aspirations and dreams of becoming business leaders. “It’s important that young people see human beings providing a caring, active lifestyle, and that’s what we’re doing,” says Townsend. -jason thompson
