Director of Marketing, EMI Gospel
EMI Gospel has a slew of accomplishments to boast about. Billboard honors, Grammy nominations, artist recognition on domestic and foreign soils, development of new artists and the revitalization of seasoned artists’ careers. Behind all the glitz and glamour are the people who set the stage for success like EMI Gospel’s director of marketing, Karen Jackson.
Jackson started out as a receptionist at the front desk, having picked up a job while working on her master’s degree in psychology.
“I wasn’t looking to be in this business. I wanted to be a counselor,” said Jackson during this year’s Stellar Awards where EMI Gospel received 21 nominations. “This industry found me. It is nail-biting work. But it is a feeling like no other when my artists come out on top. It is very rewarding work. It is the least appreciated, but in the end it is all worth it.”
Jackson has spent the last eight years successfully promoting some of gospel music’s most recognizable names — Smokie Norful, Kierra Sheard, The Clark Sisters and Donald Lawrence. It is her responsibility to ensure that the artists are exposed to every opportunity possible to utilize their gifts and spread their God-given messages.
“You have to watch and listen and take your time. You can either run through life and miss a lot of things or walk through and enjoy every moment of it,” says Jackson. -jessica l. johnson
