Editor-In-Chief, XXL & Rides
As an intern at Vibe magazine in 1996, Datwon Thomas dreamed of the day he’d nab his first magazine cover story. Twelve years later he has managed to achieve that dream, and then some.
After serving as the editor-in-chief of King and Rides magazines, Thomas was appointed as the editor-in-chief of XXL. In recent years, he’s added television appearances and video game voice-over work to his list of accomplishments. And if that isn’t enough, the 32-year-old writer and entrepreneur has also launched his own tee shirt line called Rec Room.
So what’s a guy to do once he realizes his dream? According to Thomas, he keeps on dreaming. “Your dreams just have to keep growing bigger,” he says. “That’s why you hear really successful people tell you to dream big. It’s really true.”
With that in mind, Thomas says he’s already putting the pieces of his next big endeavor together. “Right now, my dream is to have a really solid career in entertainment outside of print. I’m a sneaker fanatic and I have one of those types [athletic shoes] of shows in the work,” he reveals.
Proof positive that goals are attainable, Thomas has no problem passing the reigns to a new generation of writers. In fact, he’s downright happy about it. “I’m so excited for them because whatever the people who helped me out saw in me, I now see in some of these new writers. It’s fun because they don’t even know they’ve got it,” he explains.
There is a major cause of concern for him, however. “I just hope that entertainment produces quality artists and stars that will help these young writers become the best at what they do,” Thomas confides. “You’re only as good as the talent that’s around you to write about.” -ivory m. jones
