Judge, Harris County, Municipal Courts
Though the month of March may seem an odd time for an election, for a judge it is just the opposite. Judge Steven Kirkland, a judge in Houston’s municipal courts, has dedicated the past six years to the United States court system. Come March 4th, all of his hard work for the preservation of the American legal system and equality in the courtroom will be … well, judged. Kirkland is seeking the Democratic nomination for the 215th District Court of Harris County, Texas. Fortunately, the outstanding track record that Kirkland has established and his notable accomplishments speak for themselves.
A human rights advocate, Kirkland is a former president and founding board member of Avenue Community Development Corporation, a non-profit organization committed to providing economic opportunities and affordable housing while preserving cultural, and historical diversity in the Houston area
Kirkland says that a prime educational strategy is to unite with one another and make the community a true melting pot. “Mixed communities are healthy communities,” he says. “We learn and enrich each other that way.”
The judge is also noted for creating a legal service for the homeless community. The “Homeless Court” as it is known around the nation, provides services to the homeless community to substantially decrease the number of legal violations these citizens may have accumulated overtime.
As he prepares to run for judge in the 215th district, Kirkland’s mission is clear. “It’s all about making sure people have access to the courts [and] representation on all levels of government.”
