President, The Links, Incorporated
The Links, Incorporated, has been an advocacy organization since 1946. With 273 chapters in 42 states, as well as several countries (Germany, South Africa and the Bahamas), The Links works diligently to educate people and preserve African American culture. The organization’s president, Gwendolyn Lee, concluded that committing to the Circle of Promise, a program promoting breast cancer awareness in the African American community, is crucial.
“We believe in, and we are behind the Circle of Promise,” says Lee. “I had a sister who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 48 and also three of my close friends [were diagnosed]. That’s why [The Links] is committed to getting involved in this. We need to dispel the myths about breast cancer. If you’re informed, then you will make informed decisions.”
“Links Incorporated is unique in that it’s a service-oriented organization, but it’s service through friendship. We want to improve the quality of life for men, women, and children in the African American community. We built 62 schools in South Africa. We have always provided services and assistance to organizations over the years.”
