Tradition and excellence are two qualities that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have strived to preserve since their inception. But the fact remains that there are very few HBCUs with medical schools, which can make graduating more black doctors more difficult. However, Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., is an HBCU with a rich tradition of graduating health professionals of color.

As the dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Montgomery-Rice’s chief responsibilities are to recruit and retain a diverse group of students to enter the field of medicine. She asserts, “I love interacting with students and my gratification comes on ‘Match Day’ when the students find out where they will do their residency training.”

Dr. Montgomery-Rice’s attendance at the NMA conference was twofold; to inform prospective students about the opportunities available to them at Meharry, and to network with fellow physicians. The learned professional explains that students looking to attend Meharry can expect a “hands-on and nurturing learning environment.”

Dr. Montgomery-Rice practices obstetrics and gynecology and serves as the senior vice president of Health Affairs at Meharry, where she conducts research and is the principle investigator on a bone density research project.

The future of Meharry Medical College looks bright and is certainly a wise choice for any prospective medical student. “Ninety-two percent of our students receive their first or second choice on ‘Match Day’ and I’m very proud of that,” boasts Dr. Montomery-Rice. Meharry will increase the number of students in the near future to adhere to the Association of American Medical Colleges requirements.
