Founder, Brothers Against Guns
“Spray Love & Peace, Not Bullets,” is the motto the Brothers Against Guns organization has selected as they embark on a national crusade to put an end to gun violence.
“Brothers Against Guns is a nonprofit organization that started because of the death of my oldest brother, Reginald C. Scott, who was killed in the city of Detroit in 1989,” says Fred Hart Sr., B.A.G.’s founder and president. “The purpose of this organization is to educate the youth about the dangers of firearms [and] to teach them life skills. We do entrepreneurship [and] conflict resolution to let them know there are other means of handling different conflicts.”
Since 2004, B.A.G. has teamed up with schools, counselors, teachers and principals to reach at-risk youth.
“[We have] partnered with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office and other administrators to let [the children] see the the difference between handling situations the correct and proper way [and] the end result of firearms — not only how it affects the person they have shot, but their life and family members,” says Hart.
Though the rewards are often few and the challenges are sometimes overly abundant, Hart understands that this is his calling and finds peace in his service to the community.
“I love it when different youth let us know that they appreciate what we have done,” Hart says. “What’s not to love when you’re saving [the] lives of the new generation of youth that we need to have as our leaders for tomorrow?”
