The beloved broadcast journalist Ed Gordon, who came to national prominence on Black Entertainment Television in the 1980s, has agreed to return to BET.

The Detroit-born and bred Gordon joined BET in 1988 but left the station when his popular "BET Tonight With Ed Gordon" was shockingly and mysteriously cancelled eight years ago. According to an inside source at BET, Gordon will rejoin the network's news division and contribute to various programs, specials and events.

Gordon's return corresponds with the iconic station's 30th anniversary. "I am excited about coming back to BET," Gordon said. "Since my departure, viewers have told me consistently they wanted me to retrun to the network. Well, here I am! I am elated about the plans we have to serve the viewers and cover our community and the world."

"As BET celebrates its 30th anniversary, it brings me great joy to welcome back one of America's most prominent news personalities," BET chairman and CEO Debra Lee said in a statement.

The apex of Gordon's popularity on BET was arguably when he had that famous sit-down with accused murderer O.J. Simpson. Gordon also shined on the "Today" show, "60 Minutes II" and "Dateline." –terry shropshire
